Carrying out checks prior to appointment is a vital part of the recruitment process. There are a range of issues which can be addressed, not all of which will be appropriate in the circumstances. Some of the recruitment checks can time to process and it may not be practical to delay the job offer until they are completed, as it increases the risk of the chosen candidate being offered another position. It is recommendable to make the job offer, but with the stipulation that the checks are cleared in due course.

Seeking references is a relatively easy and cost-effective exercise that can guard against withdrawing job offers or dismiss staff after uncovering misrepresentations in job applications. When approaching former employers for references, you should at the very least seek to confirm dates of employment, final salary and reason for leaving.
