End of Year Review & Performance Rating

Performance assessment is undertaken at the year end, and is informed by performance review discussions throughout the year. It gives the opportunity for the employee's in year performance to be given an objective assessment and for them to be rewarded accordingly. Any assessment of performance should be both specific and relevant and the provision of good feedback is an integral part of good performance management.

Guidance

During the End of Year performance objective the manager and jobholder should discuss how the year has gone and the level of the jobholder’s achievement in relation to their objectives.

  • Individuals and managers should gather examples regarding performance and give the specifics of what has been achieved and how it has been achieved.
  • Different approaches and delivery styles should be valued in achieving work objectives.
  • Line managers must feel confident in giving feedback, have the required skills and both line management and HR support.
  • Feedback should not be limited to the immediate line manager and should be from a number of sources, as appropriate to the role and the identified success criteria in the objectives e.g. through 360º feedback, customer and stakeholder feedback.
  • Feedback should not come as a surprise to the recipient.
  • Critical feedback should be underpinned with a discussion around improvement options.
