Design High Level Organisational Model
This stage is about developing a high-level organisational model, and to do this you will need to address a number of 'strategic questions' about the future structure. It would be rare for the Organisation Design practitioner to design the Framework from scratch. It is more likely they'll be working from an existing model. It's important that they understand the model they are working with and the impact this has in tackling change and the governance impact.
Guidance
At this stage, the future organisation model will be defined at a high level. Your focus should be on the central question of how work will be organised and grouped in the future structure. There are five main options to consider:
- By function, process or skill.
- By product or service.
- By customer or market segment.
- By geography.
- Front office or back office hybrid.
Building the high-level organisation model typically involves building 3 or 4 different options (based on those just listed) and testing the feasibility of each option and the extent to which they meet the design criteria.
The Organisation Design practitioner needs to understand the model that has been chosen as this will influence the next steps taken.
