The CIMA's CPD policy

CIMA

CIMA members have an obligation to undertake development activities to ensure they are professionally competent as they carry out their roles.

What is CIMA Professional Development?

CIMA Professional Development is an output-based policy is applicable to all members. This development allows members to concentrate on the learning activities relevant to them and the ensuing learning outcomes.

Members can formalise their CPD activities using the Development Cycle and by doing so they can maximise the benefit of CPD by evaluating their learning outcomes and defining their progress towards their career aspirations.

As part of membership the policy requires members to progress through the CIMA Professional Development Cycle on annual basis and to keep records of their development activities as evidence, should CIMA sample them as part of the monitoring process.

The benefits of CIMA Professional Development:

  • Members can show their professional competence and ethical awareness, which will drive their employability, giving them a competitive edge in the employment market place.
  • Encourages members to define their professional aspirations and work towards them.
  • CPD enables members, through continuous improvement, to be able to take advantage of change.
  • It encourages employers in the retention of professional and competent staff and gives the public confidence that the profession is maintaining high standards of practice.

Our policy

CIMA Professional Development (CPD) policy helps and supports all members, as it takes into account individual learning styles and preferences. It encourages members to reflect on and evaluate what they have gained from the activity and how they can apply what they have learnt to their role. This approach also helps each member to focus on identifying activities that are relevant to their individual or future roles, which will enable them to fulfill those roles more effectively.

The focus of CIMA Professional Development

CPD has a dual focus:

  • The quality of ongoing performance in a chosen role, whatever that role may be
  • The forward-looking career development of each individual member.

Members should address the following areas, dependent on their specific role, when formulating relevant development activities:

  • technical skills
  • knowledge and awareness of changes in the regulatory, statutory and business environment applicable to that member’s role
  • business, management and interpersonal skills.

Key requirements of members' policy

  • Members are required to undertake the CIMA Professional Development.
  • All members are required to undertake the CIMA Professional Development Cycle. It is for members to assess their development goals and needs, select the most appropriate activities, and design their CPD programmes accordingly.

What next?

  • CIMA’s member requirements state that CPD will be based on trust between member and line manager at their Performance Appraisal Report.
  • Recording your CPD, and to submit CPD Record Form or one in a similar format containing CPD evidence that shows their compliance with all six steps of the CPD Cycle. For example: The CPD action plan contained within the online CPD Planner; Confirmation of being on an accredited employer scheme (within CIMA Development); or a completed employer's appraisal form or personal development plan; or a GFP Record Form.

Undertaking CPD under another professional body’s CPD scheme

CIMA will not provide mutual recognition of the CPD schemes of other professional bodies so members must ensure that they comply with CIMA’s CPD requirements.
